The Miracle Workout

September 21, 2009

I just recently found out that September is “Self-Improvement Month.” It’s not like me to miss such a ‘well known’ and celebrated event if you knew me and how I feel about self improvement.

Joking aside, self improvement is of course a serious matter. Especially when it comes to your health. Because when you improve your health, EVERYTHING else in your life improves around you.

So today let’s talk about the #1, super easy, most enjoyable way to get and stay healthy…

It’s… WALKING. Everyone can do it, it costs nothing, it fuels, refreshes, stimulates the mind, burns calories. You can’t beat it, but you can walk “better” and here’s how…but before I get into it you should know that I promote higher intensity interval training more for better benefits (HIIT) only if you have built your fitness level to that point.

Walk slower – New research shows walking slower burns more calories, and is easier on the joints. Say goodbye to those annoying speed walkers who cut you up on the sidewalk in their pink shell suits!

Get a pedometer – When it comes to health and fitness, numbers are key. Calories burned, BMI, pounds dropped, exercise reps and steps walked. Tracking your numbers gives you targets and shows your progress. A pedometer is a great way to make walking more beneficial.

Find a walking buddy – It’s always easier to stay motivated and stick to a schedule when you’re not the only one doing it. Find a walking buddy (at the gym, friends, family, online?) and schedule daily walks.

Pretty straightforward, huh? Left, right, left, right… Don’t underestimate the power of this simple exercise and start walking more today.
